NewsMountwood Education This half term draws to a close after 6 weeks of hard work from all our students. One of our students in year 11 is working hard in preparation for GCSEs, to sit the first of these in November. We have made new links with Myerscough College to widen our curriculum and give extended opportunities learning outside the classroom, and we continue to work closely with Sir Tom Finney High School with some of their FE students continuing to visit Mountwood each week. Another addition this term is attendance at an all day music group which provides a varied programme of musical experience and education. A new programme of enrichment opportunities this term has seen students visiting many places of interest outside school, ranging from Bolton Museum to Lyme Park to see where some of Pride and Prejudice was filmed. Mountwood Care One of our young people has been to the local drama club and has really enjoyed himself. He has been making friends and been doing some role playing whilst at the club. This is a big achievement for him as he was always very reluctant to attend local community activities and has also lacked the confidence to access unfamiliar settings, where he would come in contact with new people.
One of our young people has been attending the local Scout club where he has participated in numerous activities and gained confidence in himself. He has attended a Halloween sponsored walk in school which he designed his own costume for and won an achievement award.
Another of our young people has achieved an award in school for reaching her rewards target for education and Mountwood followed up by rewarding her with a new book full of bright colours that she enjoys.
It has been an excellent month at Mountwood with all our young people achieving in all areas and participating in various activities where they have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Aroona Care One of our young people has been to a number of chess tournaments and really enjoyed herself. She won many of her matches and felt very proud of her achievements. She has also been attending a range off keep fit classes in the local community 2/3 times a week, these include taekwondo, pilates, boxercise and zumba as well as taking part in fitness activities in the house on the Wii. This is a big achievement for her as she was always very reluctant to take part in sports activities, and has also lacked the confidence to access unfamiliar settings where she would come in contact with new people.
One of our young people has been started work experience at a local Equestrian Centre – she has been helping with grooming horses and teaching classes, and has also been given the opportunity to ride the horses and develop her own skills. She has helped them at various competitions and her efforts have been appreciated by the team. She has been traveling to the Equestrian Centre on the bus independently and developed a really good routine. Staff have been really pleased that she has accessed her placement independently and have noticed that her confidence has grown significantly over the last month. She is also progressing well with her driving lessons and will be taking her theory test later this month or next.
We are always interested to hear from people who would like to join our existing staff on either a full time or casual basis. If you would like further information please telephone 01524 762 222
