A Description of Mountwood Academy

Mountwood Academy is a residential and day independent special school situated in the centre of Preston Lancashire.

Mountwood offers both school and residential facilities in clearly delineated areas on the same campus, both with disabled access. Mountwood is equipped with ramps, lift, wide corridors and doors, and disabled toilet and bathroom facilities. Other specialist equipment will be provided for individual young people as the need arises.

Child Reading Book

The school is well equipped with general purpose classrooms, a library area, an assembly hall and a general technology area. There are also good facilities for ICT throughout the school, together with office space and meeting rooms.
All students will follow a modified National Curriculum personalised to their unique individual and special needs. The school will operate for 25 taught hours per week, in addition to morning break and lunch breaks.

Lounge Area

The living area is on two levels and features kitchen/dining areas, lounge/living areas, a disabled bathroom, garden and play areas, a lift and 15 spacious single en-suite bedrooms spread over two floors. The floors are separated to cater for young people with physical disabilities on the ground floor, while the more physically able will reside on the first floor. Each floor will have its own activities during the evening and weekends to retain a ‘home’ environment with smaller groups. Of course the young people are able to socialise together between the floors as they make friends within the school, however we feel smaller groups will allow the young people to gain individuality and increased fulfilment. The living area is warm, comforting and inviting. It is furnished and decorated to a high standard.

The school and living area function independently but alongside each other to create a ‘holistic approach’ in meeting the academic and social needs of each individual learner. This is a learning centred philosophy that wraps all provision around the learner to maximise their chance of success.
